Sustainability, Innovation & Emotion - PIANCA

Sustainability, Innovation & Emotion

How do you create sustainable furniture? What recycled materials can be used? What emotions does a product arouse? Pianca attempts to answer these and other questions, along with designers Cristina Celestino, Simone Bonanni and Davide Brugiolo, and architect David Darling.

Sustainability, innovation and emotion are the key themes of the debate organised by the Consulate General of Italy and the Italian Institute of Culture in San Francisco in collaboration with the American Institute of Architects San Francisco (AIASF).

Cristina Celestino and Simone Bonanni have been collaborating with Pianca for a long time. Celestino designed the Calatea collection (armchair and chair) and the Amante bed, Bonanni the Domenica bed and Kyoto bedroom furniture set. Davide Brugiolo is a carpet designer who works with Tessoria Asolana, a long-established Veneto producer of artisan rugs; David Darling is a founder member of Aidlin Darling Design, a multidisciplinary studio in San Francisco.

Starting with some iconic case studies, like the Calatea Green armchair designed by Cristina Celestino for Pianca, the Veneto company discusses themes linked to sustainable design with the designers: ranging from the importance of research to selecting recyclable materials, the latest technologies, the best processes and the emotions and values that a piece of furniture can embody, amongst others.
