On 27th December, together with the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, the Chicago Athenaeum jury declared the list of designs worthy of Good Design Awards. These included Pianca’s Cornice sideboard in the furniture 2020, section.
«Of the thousands of designers and manufacturers who took part this year, the Good Design 2020 winners convinced the jury of their merit not solely with their visual design, but also with their unrivalled functional qualities, raising the bar even higher in their industry», declared Christian Narkiewicz-Laine, architecture critic and curator of the Good Design Awards. «Design is not just about the object created, it’s also about the experience that goes with it, how it makes us feel, think and learn.»
This approach to design is in perfect alignment with Pianca’s philosophy: «Thinking, Loving, Living», the motto of all of its products. The Cornice sideboard was singled out, in particular, for its innovative vision in spatial and functional terms. Meticulously designed in every detail, it breaks the mould of classic style canons, challenging the concept of limits.
The frame, consisting of a black epoxy varnished frame structure, borders all of the panels, highlighting their height difference compared to the top. The sunken top, lacquered or covered in synthetic leather, thus assumes the configuration of a tray, an «added» space, designed for storage of personal items or various kinds of accessories like a lamp or vase.
A new concept of space is also expressed in the end doors, which open sideways, modifying the normal way of accessing the inside shelves and the classic style of this category of furniture. It’s an interesting construction detail, since its style and function are revealed only through everyday use.
